The story
Chapter 1 1994
The Red Fish bar, a Friday night. Two ten-year-olds, a foosball table with a loose rod, nine all. El Rubio fires a cross-shot, the ball clangs off the goal… and the bar owner was watching TV.
Nobody saw if it went in. Nobody ever found out.
Chapter 2 1994 – today
They have played every Friday since. And now the whole world fills the napkin: every Fusbolín match that ends adds a point to whoever won it, whoever was playing.
Dead level. Except for that one goal, which counts or does not, depending on who you ask.
Chapter 3 The method
El Rubio gets up at six to practise bicycle kicks against the garage wall. He says foosball is technique.
Gary dances. He says foosball is rhythm. He has worn the bar's fish on his shirt since that night, for luck.
Chapter 4 Tonight
The neighbourhood got tired of hearing about it. They built a stadium, hung a banner that says SIN VAR — no VAR — and put a cup on the line: four rounds, five-a-side, one champion.
This time the bar owner does not decide. You do.
Bonus chapter Gary's side
Thirty years on, Gary wants his revenge: one tackle, El Rubio dummying, and Don Tito, the bar owner, with the cards in his pocket. This time he swears he is watching.
Too early and he is through on goal. Just right and he goes down clean. Too late, a card.
